![]() Upon arrival to the Observatory Lodge you will pay at the entrance to the hotel property at a big yellow gate with a guard house. In fact part of the premises was constructed for a team of Volcanologists for the Smithsonian Institution who lived on-site in the 1970s you will probably pass by the residence building constructed for them that is now part of the Observatory Lodge hotel and aptly named the “Smithsonian Rooms”. Even though you feel like the crater is practically on top of you, the eruptions from decades past all went a bit further north of the Observatory. There's too many great options in the area at that price point. The Observatory Lodge is situated about as close to the volcano as you will get, yet is located in the “green zone” or essentially the no risk zone. And for this we paid what we did for one night? Give me a break! Either they get their act together, or gradually they will lose more business. 4) The property as a whole looked not cared for properly: cracked stairs, terrible signage, poor lighting outside the rooms. When I opened one of the curtains, the wooden rod and curtain fell on me, and hit me in the arm. 3) The curtain rods were hanging by a "thread". Just changing the bulbs to non-white bulbs would make a huge difference. 2) The space was super-dark and unwelcoming, accentuated by the dark brown-painted bamboo covered walls, and illuminated all over using white fluorescent lamps. The room had so many issues: 1) It was NOT clean (the shelves behind the bed and the floor being the two prime examples, although there was a distinct broom and other cleaning utensils sticking out of a vase by the door). That is why I give them two stars, and I am pushing it. The food was unique, made using with ingredients they harvest in the property, and the attention in the restaurant was incredible too, much like we found everywhere in CR. The location and consequently the view were outstanding. No paper towels (because they left us about 10). Now a bunch of dead bugs all over the bedroom floor until they come remedy. We sprayed them first with natural essential oils because I hate deet. ![]() Just got back after a nice day out at the hot springs to find them back! Leaving now to go to dinner after we wait for them again to do something. Ugh!! I can handle the lizards and frogs even snakes! But all I could think of is them crawling all over me at night. They said they get them sometimes when it rains. We left and had them spray or whatever they did. But the biggest issue of all- 2nd day- all along the glass doors and up the curtains were these big ant like bugs! Like ingested. Someone’s old shampoo sample was in the shower. The refrigerator tilts every time you open it. Complained and said they would be ready in the morning and we could come get them. No idea what the temperature was since it was so old and broken. Not only did the hot plate not have knobs, you plugged it in and one burner went on. But it started with it being very rustic and out dated. I think because no one wanted the one we had. Arrived and thought they up graded us from a one bedroom to 2 villa. As you probably can imagine, I would recommend you find somewhere else to stay!īy far the worst place I’ve ever spent. If I find a place to upload my pics I will upload them. In addition to the rodents, you will find rotten deck boards, large sections of tile missing from the pool, which is freezing and unusable, no cushions for the chairs (like shown in the pictures), etc. (Uploaded) We went down and spoke to management, very nicely asked for a reduction in the price per night, flat out was told NO, he did offer to take care of a $44.00 dinner, awesome huh, considering we were charged over $300 a night! As you can imagine, the family did not sleep great at all the next 3 nights and our time there was not pleasant. At least now we know how they are getting in! It gets better, then when making our bed we notice one of our pillows appeared to be what looks like a mouse hotel, chunks of foam taken out of the pillow, an actual tunnel through the pillow itself, crazy right! I have pictures of all of this however it appears you cannot upload them anywhere. The next morning we woke up and found that some fruit we had bought was eaten by what appeared to be mice, great!! Next, we notice mice dropping leading to the back patio door and notice that the rear doors are not sealed, I mean at least a 2-3 inch gap on both sides of the sliding doors. When we first arrived it was dark and we were very tired, pretty much unpacked and crashed for the night. My family and I were there on our first rain forest vacation and the first trip to Costa Rica. GreenLagoon Arenal Waterfall Villas was probably a very nice place several years ago, however, and I’m really not sure if this is due to a management change or what, but it is now pretty bad.
